Born and raised in Germany, Thilo Schaller started playing violin at the age of seven, followed by clarinet, saxophone, and piano. For studies in Classical Clarinet and Art of Sound at the Royal Conservatoire The Hague, he moved to the Netherlands.
Fascinated by the emotional power of the interplay between sound and image, Thilo went on to study Composition in Contexts and Sound Design at the Utrecht School of Arts. In 2010, he relocated to Canada and currently divides his time between Toronto and the Niagara Region.
Thilo composes autonomous music as well as for various media, ranging from film to interactive games and Virtual Reality experiences. His music has been described as ‘contemporary and accessible’ and ‘incredibly evocative.’ His first score for Canadian Film was nominated for the Alberta Film and Television Awards. Recent film credits include the feature documentary ‘A Portrait of Redemption in Five Acts’ and the folk horror feature ‘The Curse of Audrey Earnshaw’. As a music producer, Thilo has worked with soloists, ensembles, and orchestras internationally, including producing award-winning (e.g., Echo Jazz) or award-nominated (Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik) albums.
Thilo was an early adopter of immersive playback configurations and conceptualizes and currently composes his music in 7.1.4 where direction, spatialization and immersion are not an afterthought but an integral part of the creative process. In 2021, Thilo Schaller co-founded IMEXsound, a company that specializes in technically and artistically convincing immersive audio experiences. With IMEXsound, Thilo has worked on international productions, such as the Assassins Creed Symphonic Adventure (Ubisoft and Overlook Events) and recordings with the Aalborg Symphony Orchestra (Denmark) for the 10-year anniversary of the mobile game mega-hit Subway Surfers.
Thilo is a member of the Screen Composers Guild of Canada and the Audio Engineering Society.
